Interview guidance

Once you are registered as a Childcarer with Sugar & Spice, you will be sent out to interview with parents for potential employment. It is essential that you create a good first impression and as part of our service to registered Childcarers, we can offer tips and guidance on how best to present yourself to potential employers, improving your chances of securing that coveted role.

DBS checks & First Aid

Before being sent out to interview, all Candidates must be in possession of an Enhanced DBS check. A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check provides details of an individual’s criminal record to help in recruitment of suitable staff. When the DBS check is complete, candidates receive a DBS certificate. The Enhanced DBS check is the highest level of criminal record check and is available for those working in Regulated Activity with children.

If you do not have a DBS check in place prior to registering with the agency, then you will be required to undergo this check. We can arrange for this on your behalf, and you will need to cover the cost directly.

We also require that all Candidates be in possession of a Paediatric First Aid qualification prior to registering with us. If you wish to register with us but you do not currently have this in place, you will be required to undertake a suitable course prior to final registration with us, at your own cost. We have close links with a couple of First Aid providers and we can put you in touch with these directly to enable you to obtain discounted prices.

Tax & insurance advice

As an employee, it is a requirement by law that your employer (the parents you will be working for) pay your Tax and National Insurance for you. You will therefore be quoted a gross salary figure when you attend for interview, this is the amount that the employer will be paying in total for you. We will advise you as to how much net salary you will be left with after tax and insurance have been deducted, and will be able to help and advise you on any queries you may have concerning your salary.

Whilst working as a childcarer in someone’s home, you have the same legal responsibilities as other childcare professionals (nursery workers, childminders etc). However, so many nannies, mother’s helps and maternity nurses working today don’t have any insurance in place. As part of our commitment to high standards of service, we actively encourage all our childcarers to arrange adequate public liability insurance, not only does this give you peace of mind should the unthinkable happen, but it also demonstrates to potential employers that you operate at a high standard and value the trust placed in you.

We have partnered up with Nannytax, a specialist payroll service for parents and nannies and they can help you arrange Nannyinsure for a very reasonable annual fee. In addition they can offer specialist advice in relation to any queries you may have in relation to tax and national insurance.
